Fair and Lovely: Does a change in name reverse all the damages caused by the brand? Or does HUL have a moral obligation to go further?

Image
HUL’s Fair and Lovely, to drop the word ‘Fair’ from its name. Does that mean the brand finally understood its part in the unfair colourism problem in India? Or is it just another Marketing gimmick to survive the new generation that has the means to raise voices against the big brands?   While it is not fair to say that Fair and Lovely or the other fairness brands started a stigma against dark-skinned people, one must agree that these brands fed on them and capitalised on people’s insecurities for years now.

Kaala - A flashback review #2yearsofKAALA

Image
As the film completes 2 years since release, today. I thought I would share the review again for this highly controversial, above-average yet unforgettable 'Rajini' movie. (I am not writing anything new, just sharing the review I once wrote on FB.) KAALA A female protestor is fighting against the police, the policemen catch her and remove her pants forcibly. 'Cause, the easiest way to silence a woman is to strip her off her honour, isn't it? They wear a wicked smile on their faces as she struggles to move towards her pants. She reaches near her dress but her hand grasps something else. A lathi. She beats back at the police, her pants still lying on the ground. This is what 'Kaala' is about. Kaala is a Rajinikanth's film, but it is not all about him. It's about the people and he's one of them. He's not Velu Nayakar 'Ayya' or Baasha 'Bhai' or even Raju 'Bhai'. The kids who play cricket with him call him Kaala, just K...

Sarvam thaala mayam - a short review

Image
S arvam thaala mayam There's a reason why most directors choose college students as their protagonists or why the lead characters are backed up with a forced love track in most movies. It's because those subjects are easy to connect with. But, imagine taking the thing you least care about and making you watch it for almost 2 hours straight. That's where the movie wins. There are a plenty of scenes with just mrindangam and there's a whole 4 to 5 minutes of traditional classical concert, all of this with no extra added sounds or masala, and you bet, it’s a treat. Yes, the same music that usually makes us change the channel (before our mom hears!!) I basically love movies with underdogs breaking the stigmas and making it to the top. Now take that concept and add a fusion of our local flavour with the rich traditional Carnatic music and Indian casteism (a safe play by Rajiv Menon). This is Sarvam thaala mayam in a nutshell. Rajiv Menon questions many ...

Remembering the legend on his birthday - A.R.Rahman.

Image
Remembering the legend on his birthday - A.R.Rahman. Though his contributions can’t be listed in a single day. Here’s five of my most favourite moments from him, the moments which I think worked largely because of the music. The moments, which has music at its soul. Pure unadulterated lust Movie: O Kaadhal Kanmani Aadhi wants to leave Taara in her hostel as soon as possible, as he fears something might happen, due to the increasing sensuality between them. But Taara pushes him by asking what will happen. As Aadhi answers she pushes further, thus his answer gradually moves from a possibility of a hug to possibility of him getting pulled into her room. With every answer increasing desire, she finally pulls him into her room. Until then the initial mild portion of ‘Naanea varugirean’ plays out in the background. As they finally get inside, the shot cuts to the mirror with a blurred refection of them and there it starts. The music elevates with the lyric ‘Chinnanc...

“Are you watching closely? Look closer”.  Because, if your observation skills are good enough, there is 99% chance that you might have already noticed the things, that we are gonna discuss here.(*Spoiler alert*) The prestige - Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, or let me put it this way, one of his masterpieces. Starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in lead roles. Black swan- Directed by Darren Aronfsky. Starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in lead roles, for which Portman won the Academy awards for best actress. Despite the totally different theme and screenplay, anyone who has seen both the films, would have experienced a deja vu while seeing the second film. So, let’s just thrash out and list the common theories and concepts between these beautiful mind bending thrillers. (I have mentioned Borden as a single character in many places, to avoid confusion) 1. Art             Art, artist, artiste...

I still remember days, when one can get a hearty meal in marriage functions (Indian).Albeit the very few variety; one can get a substantial meal. On the contrary, today we have a wide variety of foods. From French fries to pasta, everything has been imported to Indian functions. Your plate will consist of all of these, but everything is measured in a pea sized spoon (Well, not accurately pea sized). You'll eat a spoon of your variety rice and before the taste dissolves, the next spoon you might have to eat another dish. If you are a fan of the second type, then Anegan is tailor made for you. With a Concept which have a numerous concepts of its own. Anegan is a film that lives up to its name. Anegan - Single but multiple people. With four different stories the director tries to bind you to your seats. And a story is fully told within a duet song!!And speaking of songs, both the director and music director fails trying to bind you to your seats. You would get out of the theater in...
